Summary
The short poem “On My Sister” focuses on the cyclical nature of abusive relationships. Written from the point-of-view of a speaker supporting their sister’s hopeful suffering through her relationships, the abuse cycle victimizes both subjects: the sister is the direct recipient, and the speaker remains a constant supporter. Yet, they are both trapped in this cycle because of their hope that things will be better, which ultimately unifies them in their suffering.
